Strongyli islet in easternmost Greece to get its first ever road

Strongyli, one of the small islands of the complex of Megisti, in the easternmost part of Greek territory, is going to get its first road network ever.

The regional government of the Southern Aegean plans to honor these small but very important islands for Greece and keeping its promise to endow them with infrastructure for first time, media reported on Tuesday.

The project follows the construction of a port on the islet Ro.

The work is still underway and is scheduled to be completed by the end of November, providing Strongyli with a road network for the first time in its history.

A 3-meter wide road is being constructed from the pier to the top of Strongyli, an extremely difficult construction due to the morphology of the island and its rocky terrain.

Strongyli Megistis also called simply Strongyli or Ypsili, is about four kilometers south-east of the island of Kastellorizo. The rather flat and rocky island is about 1.5 kilometers long, and up to 700 meters wide. It covers an area of about 0.9 square kilometers.

According to the 2021 census, the island has 1 inhabitant.

It has a lighthouse, which has the characteristic of being the easternmost building in Greece. There is also a cargo aerial cableway which is used by the army to transport cargo from the area of disembarkation to the Surveillance Outpost of Strongyli.

The islet is of strategic importance for Greece and is one of the dozens Greek islets in the Aegean Sea that Turkey claims to have onwership.
